This collection focuses on drawings students made about feedback and assessment and which were analysed for their perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs towards those phenomena. This approach has been used by me and my colleagues in New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Brazil.

The New Zealand materials arose from the Measuring Teachers' Assessment Practices project funded by the Faculty of Education (as it was then) Research Development Fund that employed Dr Lois Harris as a Post-Doc Research Fellow at the University of Auckland. That work generated the following studies.
Feedback was published as:
Harris, L. R., Brown, G. T. L., & Harnett, J. (2014). Understanding classroom feedback practices: A study of New Zealand student experiences, perceptions, and emotional responses. Educational Assessment, Evaluation and Accountability, 26(2), 107-133. doi:10.1007/s11092-013-9187-5
Assessment was published as:
Harris, L. R., Harnett, J., & Brown, G. T. L. (2009). “Drawing” out student conceptions of assessment: Using pupils’ pictures to examine their conceptions of assessment. In D. M. McInerney, G. T. L. Brown, & G. A. D. Liem (Eds.), Student Perspectives on Assessment: What Students can Tell us about Assessment for Learning (pp. 53-83). Charlotte, NC: Information Age Publishing.

The Hong Kong study of how university students drew pictures of assessment was conducted with Dr Zhenlin Wang at the Hong Kong Institute of Education with funding from the Faculty of Education Studies Internal Research Grant. Candy Tang was the research assistant who animated the focus group studies.
Assessment was published as:
Brown, G. T. L., & Wang, Z. (2013). Illustrating assessment: How Hong Kong university students conceive of the purposes of assessment. Studies in Higher Education, 38(7), 1037-1057. doi:10.1080/03075079.2011.616955

The Brazil study was collected by Dr Daniel Matos as part of his PhD field work (with my supervision along with Prof Sergio Cirino). Analysis of part of the work has been carried out by Mariana Vaz LANDIM for MEd thesis "A avaliação sob o ponto de vista dos estudantes: o uso de desenhos para a análise de concepções de avaliação [Assessment from the students' point of view: Use of drawings to analyze conceptions of assessment]" at the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Brazil under the joint supervision of myself and Dr Matos. The study was published as:
Landim, M. V., Matos, D. A. S., & Brown, G. T. L. (2015). A avaliação sob o ponto de vista dos estudantes: o uso de desenhos para a análise de concepções de avaliação [Assessment from the students’ point of view: the use of drawings to analyze conceptions of assessment]. Psicologia, Educação e Cultura, 19(2), 55-74.

Other studies that have used this technique include:
1. a completed MA thesis I co-supervised by Safeya Janahi
2. an incomplete PhD thesis I co-supervised by Chenyan Tang
