This patent landscape snapshot is centred on insights relating to fruit innovation for human food consumption, particularly those of greatest interest to NZ exports like kiwifruit, apples, berries, avocado, and grape. Our report has attempted to focus on the sweet spot of adding value to fruit commodities throughhealthoutcomes utilising whole fruit, whole fruit powders or juices.

First, we give a high level overview since 2015 to give you a sense of the big picture trends. Then, we delve deeper into the last two years to analyse more recent patent activity, and two case study examples to demonstrate links and opportunities to High Value Nutrition’s four health pillars (immune, digestive, metabolic and infant health).

Excluded from our report when diving deeper into the key patents from the past two years are:

-heavy refinement or processing such as fractionising into extracts, isolates or bioactives

-agricultural processes to improve crop yield or quality (unless we found them to be particularly interesting!)

-compositions that include many different fruits (e.g. many of the traditional Chinese patents)

-machinery such as fruit sorting

-non-food uses e.g. cosmetic

-pet food

-recombinant or GM technologies, synthetics
