The rate of heart failure in women accelerates after menopause, implicating the cessation of ovarian estrogen production in disease development. Histological staining of heart tissue from Wistar rats following myocardial infarction identified ovarian estrogen had some protective effects on myocardial remodelling in ovary-intact females when compared to ovariectomized females.
