Macrophages are immune cells often found in the oxygen-starved (hypoxic) regions of solid tumours. We investigated the effect of hypoxia on the anti-tumour interferon response in macrophage models. We found that hypoxia suppressed interferon signalling, decreased secretion of pro-inflammatory mediators, and promoted the acquisition of immunosuppressive changes in macrophage models.
