In New Zealand gym-based injury has steadily increased over the past ten years and in 2020 the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) injury claims for gym activity surpassed those of Rugby. This poster summarises our injury epidemiology study carried out on ten years of ACC injury claim data, a survey of gym staff where we questioned their perceptions of which exercises commonly cause injury and are typically performed with poor technique and our upcoming intervention study focussing on the use of Les Mills BODYPUMP classes to train gym users. The 12-week intervention study focusses on understanding whether Les Mills BODYPUMP can improve upper body strength, train exercise technique and change active and passive glenohumeral joint stiffness in novice participants.
