Lignans are compounds found in plants where they play an important role in plant structure and growth. Many lignans have been found to have biological activities in humans, namely anticancer, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral properties. Consequently, they have been utilised as inspiration for new pharmaceuticals.

New Zealand has a wide range of native plants with various lignans to offer as potential medicines. A notable lignan example is matairesinol – found in the resin of the Mataī tree. Matairesinol is known to have anticancer and anti-inflammatory activity, and currently has not been found in any other plant in the world.

This project involves the extraction of matairesinol from Mataī wood, the subsequent modifications to the compound and the assessment of these derivatives as potential bioactive agents. As Mataī is a taonga (treasured) species to Māori, the way the wood is sourced, harvested and handled in accordance with tikanga (Māori customs) will be considered.
