Katja Neef: The Lack of Participatory Processes in Refugee Resettlement: The Case of Bhasan Char
Cox’s Bazar is one of Bangladesh’s most vulnerable regions, exhibiting high poverty rates and environmental hazard risks. Despite this vulnerability, the area has become a refuge for more than one million Rohingya refugees from Myanmar who live in crowded camps (Bremner, 2020).
To release pressure from overcrowding in the camps, the government of Bangladesh has planned the relocation of approximately 100,000 Rohingya refugees from Cox’s Bazar to Bhasan Char, an island that was formed some 20 years ago off the coastal city of Chittagong. This resettlement project received considerable amounts of international donor funding (Hossain, 2020). This research poster unpacks whether the planned relocation upholds the refugees rights to voluntary movement and self determination.
