Bryde’s whales (Balaenoptera brydei), resident to the Hauraki Gulf, and transient to northeastern waters, are currently classified as “Nationally Critical”. In 2013, the population numbered 135 whales, and conservation efforts saw ship-strike cease—being the largest threat to mortality. Providing an updated population abundance may improve the whales’ conservation status.
