I am an Indigenous wahine of Ngāti Porou, my work explores the intergenerational obligations, duties and privileges associated with being a mokopuna of a tribal constitution, whilst raising a child in contemporary New Zealand. Each child is entrusted to us, taonga to preserve, to ensure they will contribute to mātauranga and it is this image that captures my eldest daughter, who during this PhD was the first to wear the prestige of moko, despite our connection to this birthright lost for four generations. It is this image that acts as hope, that we remain here, committed to whānau responsibilities as mokopuna.
