Candida Rolla: Hokitika, Te Wai Pounamu - Layers of Heritage
A unique place to understand the expression “cultural landscape”.
This area is famous for its natural as well as cultural Taonga, fitting the definition of “mixed heritage” of the World Heritage Convention.
This photo shows fore and foremost, the Whenua, Papatūānuku and Ranginui enclosing the passage of humanity within their embrace. Then it connects with ancestral stories, shows heritage architecture, and it opens conversations about intangible values, diversity, materials. Like the driftwood landscape, each year, transforms into amazing artworks by the hands of the community, populating the long beach with spirits and new dimensions, and creating a surreal sunset experience.
