Yan Li: Why is public transit not working in Auckland?
Approximately 18% of Auckland's urban area is covered by walkable catchments. Within these catchment areas, 12.5% of users utilize public transport, while 59.5% rely on private cars for commuting to work or school. This image illustrates the contrast between the congested roads and the relaxed train journey. It raises the questions: Why don't more people use public transport options when they are only a walkable distance away? How does the car-oriented urban form contribute to traffic jams in the city? Therefore, my study focuses on the areas around train stations in Auckland, examining them through the lens of urban morphology, which explores how cities are built and how they change over time. The results will enable us to understand the factors affecting the underutilization of train stations and their surrounding service areas, providing insights for the planning and design of these places to promote the use of sustainable transport modes.
