This visualisation illustrates the language tensions that some EAL students experience in higher education through English medium instruction in Aotearoa New Zealand. It is based on The Language Planning (LP) onion proposed by Ricento and Hornberger (1996) and further explored by Hornberger and Cassels Johnson (2007). This LP Pickled Onion takes into consideration the historical dimension for the visualisation of the different layers and agents; it is an adaptation of the model I proposed in my PhD thesis.
