This image shows the microstructure of pumice, a volcanic material used in my research to create low-carbon concrete. The coloured enhancement highlights the porous texture formed during volcanic eruptions—key to pumice’s lightweight and reactive nature. Studying this structure helps understand how pumice improves concrete strength, durability, and sustainability by reducing cement use and carbon emissions. Colours were added using OpenAI image tools to emphasise pore networks and material contrast, symbolising how Aotearoa’s volcanic heritage can guide sustainable engineering solutions.
