The image titled: Perspective; visually captures my PhD research by integrating a GIS map of New Zealand within the silhouette of a newborn, overlaid with spatial determinants identified by my research as influential on preterm birth (PTB) risk. This visual representation moves beyond aggregated national rates (hidden line), emphasising the role of environmental and social factors in shaping PTB outcomes. By creating this detailed GIS map and identifying key risk determinants, my research advocates for more precise, evidence-based interventions tailored to specific communities, rather than broad, one-size-fits-all policies. The image symbolises how changing the perspective, from abstract numbers to the underlying causes of risk, can inform and improve targeted policy and intervention strategies. It invites policymakers, researchers, and the public to recognise that where and why PTBs occur must direct efforts to reduce PTB rates and enhance maternal and infant health across New Zealand.
