Sauti Tetezi (Swahili for Voice of the People / Advocacy) depicts Cricket Writes, an artist from Kenya, performing in Mathare (second largest slum in Nairobi) at a social justice event organised by the Coalition for Grassroots Human Rights Defenders. Cricket uses poetry and theatre to highlight issues that undermine and threaten the wellbeing and development of his community. Speaking up on a range of issues, including but not limited to, police brutality, extrajudicial killings, corruption, poor leadership, youth unemployment, and marginalisation of underserved communities, Cricket voices and mirrors the lived experiences of his community members. He utilises any stage as a platform for community organising and empowerment, advocacy for justice and demanding government accountability. Cricket embodies the heart of my research which seeks to document contemporary forms of youth-led civic engagement in Africa (such as artivism) to inform youth policy and programme development from a decolonial, strength-based and youth-centric perspective.
