Carine Umutoniwase: Diamonds in the dump

<p dir="ltr">My research is looking at motivations, matters and means of youth-led civic engagement in Africa. The image, taken during my data collection in 2024, depicts the hurdles that young people working toward social justice and community development rise above for the better of their communities. Wanjiku Kamau, the lady in the picture, is sharing about youth-led work on youth, peace and security matters and work with teen mothers in informal settlements in Nairobi. The interview is being conducted at the largest dumpsite in Kenya depicting the neglect, inequality and the unjust conditions that people in informal settlements live in. Despite the strenuous conditions and the exclusive and tokenistic nature of youth engagement in Kenya, young people still hope and develop initiative to equip community members for justice and sustainable development.</p>
