Approximately 40% of the waste that reaches landfills is derived from demolition activities. Most of the demolition waste in New Zealand is not sorted on-site, which makes it harder to sort for the recycling process. Rather than demolition, building deconstruction as a sustainable solution should be prioritized to reduce landfill waste, promote reuse, and enhance recycling. By focusing on deconstruction, we can recover valuable materials, minimize environmental impact, and move towards a more sustainable future.
